Years ago I worked for IBM, Catherine, as one of the two lawyers on a team of contract writers. We met in a large conference room to revise the customer contracts from a PhD reading level to a sixth grade reading level. The head lawyer read the contracts to us, and we stopped him when we had suggested edits. We’d have hearty debates as we searched for the perfect word or phrase. We tested the final contracts by using Flesch — Kincaid readability tests. Our mission challenged us but energized us.
